Thieves loot caravans across Denmark

Opdateret: 21. nov. 2022

In the dark, thieves steal valuables and spare parts from caravans and motorhomes, completely unnoticed.

On the black market, spare parts and valuables from caravans and motorhomes are in high demand. Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS experienced this when, in May 2021, they were systematically visited by thieves.

- The thieves had acquired master keys. With them they could get in and out unnoticed. Every evening they always closed and locked up neatly after themselves. Even the hole in the fence was carefully closed after each visit, says Jesper Behrensdorff, director of Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS and board member of Camping Outdoor Denmark. He continues: in short, it was impossible to detect.

It was only when the caravans were emptied and the thieves now started peeling off the exterior values that Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS became aware of the problem.

- It was a very unfortunate discovery. It had to be stopped, of course, and it had to be stopped immediately, Jesper insists.

Thieves stopped with active surveillanc

Within 24 hours, Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS had active surveillance installed by SITE-SECURITY. Active surveillance means that the surveillance cameras are connected to a manned guard centre. Through the surveillance cameras, the control centre can register if there is unwanted activity during the night and weekends. If people turn up, the guards can use loudspeakers to ask them to leave the area and turn on the siren. If this is not enough, they can call physical guards or the police.

- Since we installed SITE-SECURITY, we have not had a single attempted break-in. I'm very happy about that. Especially because it benefits our customers. It's certainly not nice to go on holiday and find your caravan or motorhome missing its contents. Fortunately, with a lot of effort from my fantastic staff, we managed to get everyone off to a good start. Jesper says and concludes: "Fortunately, this kind of break-in will never happen to us again.

Thefts continue across the country

- Unfortunately, the problem is not over. As long as there is a black market demanding the stuff, there are also thieves to acquire it says Lasse Østergaard-Jensen who owns the security company SITE-SECURITY A/S. Lasse continues, "I'm just happy that a few more people can sleep safely at night without having their holiday ruined. Unfortunately, it is often the case that thieves simply move on to a new business. This is not a problem unique to the camping industry. Every day we install active surveillance throughout Denmark for businesses that have experienced similar cases," concludes Lasse.

And it looks like Lasse is right. Just a few days later, the North Zealand Police's 24-hour report shows that caravans were broken into within 30 km of Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS[1].

- Jesper Behrensdorff who, besides being the director of Bijé Fritid & Camping ApS, is also a board member of Camping Outdoor Denmark confirms the trend: many of our members tell the same sad story.
